I know girls aren't supposed to wear white to a wedding, and I would think they aren't supposed to wear black.....the invitation states the wedding is formal, so come dressed as formally as you feel comfortable.....kinda vague-I know I can't wear my Levis..... Long gown with sequins? Short little black dress? I have a 13 year old daughter who is also invited.....what is appropriate??How should a girl/woman dress to attend a formal black tie wedding? Need advice!!?
If it is is a midday-afternoon affair, you can use a dressy cocktail dress or even a dressy two-piece suit (something formal enough you would not wear it to the office).
If it is an evening wedding, you can go full lenght: long gowns, sequins (in moderation), etc. As far as I know, if the gentlemen are required to use black-tie, the ladies can (or should?) wear long gowns. And just a pretty dress for your girl, something she will be comfortable in.

i would dress as if i was going to church on sunday.
Both of you in long gowns is fine. I would go easy on the sequins - they are a little out-dated now. Black is fine to a wedding especially if you add a colored shawl to go with the dress.
You and your daughter could wear anything that is on the nicer side of ';dress up';
For a formal black tie wedding, you wear a long gown. Same as your daughter. Skip the sequins, go for classy and modest.
You can wear black and it can be short or long just dressy
A formal wedding is exactly that - FORMAL. You wear your best. Do not ear glitter - that is tacky and looks like a Hollywood premiere. you are not supposed to outshine the bride!! Don't wear anything too sexy either. It is a wedding. You could wear a nice top with a long skirt or a nice cocktail dress. Your 13 year old should dress appropriately for her age - don't make her look like a Lindsay wanna-be. A nice dress, no sneakers.
A nice, simple cocktail dress -- nothing flashy -- is appropriate. I would not wear a long gown. Your 13 year old should just wear a nice ';church'; dress and nice shoes.
I'm from New York and black dresses for weddings are actually pretty standard...especially if it clearly states ';black tie';. Depending on what time the party is, I would probably go for a tea-length black cocktail dress for afternoon or a longer black dress for a night reception. Your daughter can probably wear whatever she would like, along the lines of a pretty dress...
Levis are not appropriate for anything that mentions the word FORMAL.
as far as I know the only major rule is no white and probably not a good idea to wear something that would show up the bride, in reference to the Levis not a good idea. Except in California wear good (expensive) jeans are acceptable for everything except black tie
NO SEQUINS for starters. Also nothing that is revealing. You're attending a wedding, not trying to pick up men. A nice black dress is very appropriate. Stay away from RED. It draws attention away from the bride.
I would think of something you would wear to a restaurant , on a first date, where the bill would cost at least $100, that doesn't scream ';take me to bed';.
If you go shopping, even if you cannot afford or/and won't be buying from this place, go to a very expensive department store. Explain you are going to a formal wedding. Nothing wrong with acting like you will actually be buying from them. (If you're not, when you're ready to leave, just simply say you need to think about it, or want to look at a couple more shops. That will give you an easy, graceful way to leave without being talked into something you can't afford)They can show you dresses that would be appropriate. Make sure they show you shoes and purses that will match too. Also undergarments, if normal bra, panties won't work. Make sure you look at slips for dresses and/or skirts too. Once you have an idea, then look at other stores, assuming you won't/can't buy from that department store.
By the way, you don't need a floor length. Ask about ';Tea Length'; dresses/skirts.
it is very classy for a woman to wear black... go with the ';little black dress'; and cute heels and fabulous earrings. i wouldn't do sequins unless you were the mom of the bride or something. Your 13 year old daughter should just wear a nice dress...she'll be fine in anything but pants. have fun!
I would say a simple black dress would be perfect... my wedding was very small and intimate, but most of the women there had black dresses on... just make sure you don't wear anything too flashy and I think you are good to go!
they only write ';black tie'; these days, so that nobody comes in wearing jeans or khakis. you can wear whatever color you want. black and white are not taboo anymore. if you do wear white, keep it simple. you can wear the sequin dress. i hear sequins are in this year. if you want to wear your short black dress its fine, as long as its not too reveling or too short.
as for your daughter, you can put her in a nice party dress, or summer dress, but not tacky/cheap material from target or whatever.
A nice sophisticated black dress would look nice, or Navy blue, but then again it does not have to be black or any dark color like that. Maybe a nice purple dress, I think they just want you to look nice and elegant instead of cheap and slutty looking. Your daughter, can wear a nice colorful dress, she is young so why not! lol Have fun!
